Abstract
1. An accurate method for the diagnosis of placenta praevia by soft tissue radiography is described. 2. The placental site is recognised in lateral or oblique views of the abdomen and the placenta must be seen to extend on to the lower uterine segment in the lateral view of the pelvis in the erect position. 3. The useful additional sign of placenta praevia originally described by Golden and Ball (1941)—displacement of the presenting foetal part—is noted. This sign is not in itself diagnostic. 4. The results obtained in 525 cases X rayed at Mill Road Hospital, Liverpool, are given. Placenta praevia was excluded in 455 cases, and none of these was subsequently found clinically to have placenta praevia. A positive diagnosis of placenta praevia in 70 cases was definitely confirmed clinically in 61 cases.
