Apparent Instability Constants of 2-Mercaptoethylamine Complexes

Abstract
The apparent instability constants of the MEA complexes of zinc, cobalt, cadmium, and copper have been determined polarographically in a phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 and in a sodium bicarbonate solution. In these media, the zinc complex is least strong and the copper complex most strong. These data support the thesis that a portion of the protective capacity of chelating agents to radiation injury is through alteration of enzymatic activity by chelation of essential metallic coenzymes.
