The impact of general education on criminal justice pedagogy

Abstract
In recent years, colleges and universities have been reexamining their missions in light of criticisms of their core curricula. These concerns prompted Memphis State University to implement a new general education curriculum. Several courses offered by the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice were approved for inclusion in the curriculum. Rather than focusing solely on disciplinary content, these courses develop basic academic competencies while exposing students to social science methodology used in the study of crime and criminal justice. This approach facilitates reasoned, analytic study of the social problem of crime and mechanisms of social control.
