Effect of Hydrocortisone on Human Cells in Tissue Culture.

Abstract
The effect of hydrocortisone on the growth of cells in tissue culture was studied by quantitative and qualitative methods. Hydrocortisone inhibited protein synthesis and nuclear multiplication; the degree of inhibition was proportional to the concentration of the hormone and duration of exposure. Cells grown in media with hydrocortisone had larger, more variable nuclei, increased amounts of acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase and decreased amounts of succinic dehydro-genase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
