Structural Determinants of ‘Clienthood’

Abstract
Researchers and practitioners frequently fail to distinguish “true clients” from applicants. This failure accounts for the discrepancy between research findings and practice wisdom as to the efficacy of treatment The authors present an analytical model for differentiating true clients from applicants in clinical social work practice. Also, they suggest that social work practice be considered as consisting of two major divisions: socialization and treatment.
