Abstract
This study examined the measurement properties of the numerical and photographic scales of the Oucher, an instrument designed to measure children's self-reports of pain intensity Seventy-four 3- to 12-year-old hospitalized children participated in the study The Oucher was tested against two fear and two other paro measures, the five instruments were administered concurrently in random order The three paro measures were strongly correlated, the two fear measures were moderately correlated, the correlations between the pain and fear measures were low This evidence supports the convergent and discriminant validity of both scales of the Oucher The imphcations of these findings for research and clinical practice are explored. Keywords
