Failure to demonstrate immunity to leukemia associated antigens by lymphocyte transformation in vitro

Abstract
Mixed cultures of leukemic cells from acute lymphatic leukemia patients with autologous remission lymphocytes and of leukemic cells from both acute lymphatic leukemia patients and chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with the lymphocytes from an HL‐A identical sibling were performed to investigate whether sensitization against leukemia‐associated antigens was demonstrable. Although in some cases marked thymidine incorporation was measured, this cannot be interpreted as stimulation by leukemia‐associated antigens, because it cannot be distinguished from non‐specific thymidine incorporation as was shown to occur sometimes in unstimulated cultures. It is concluded that the lymphocyte transformation technique is unsuitable for the detection of immunity to leukemia‐associated antigens.Keywords
