Abstract
This paper identifies two practitioners within the ill‐defined world of Staff Development, the ‘professional’ Staff Developer and the ‘voluntary’ Departmental Adviser. The roles of each are analysed, compared and evaluated. The conclusion is made that both roles are required to improve teaching and learning in institutions of higher education. Keywords
