Abstract
With the advent of community psychiatry, the pressure of care of the mentally ill will increasingly fall on the family and the community. In order for this transition to succeed, it is important to bear in mind the attitudes of the community and the caregivers. This article reviews the literature on public attitudes and suggestions are made for future research and lessons to be learnt from the experience in Northe America. Keywords
