Age and Susceptibility to Tactile Masking Effects

Abstract
Contralateral tactile masking effects were studied in normal subjects of different ages. In consonance with previous results, a contralateral masking effect of rather weak magnitude was found for the total sample. Older subjects (50–75 years) showed greater susceptibility to masking than did younger subjects (20–49 years). An appreciable number of subjects in the older age group showed exaggerated susceptibility to masking, as defined by the range of performances in the younger group. The two age groups did not differ in respect to threshold for single tactile stimulation.
