Abstract
A mediated entry of dicarboxylic amino acids occurs in the lens of the rat. Transport is accomplished at special sites as evidenced by the saturable nature of the uptake by lenses incubated in vitro, and by selective competition of closely related amino acids. A significant nonsaturable component is also present. The mediating system has low capacity compared to that for neutral and dibasic amino acids. Kinetic parameters of the entry process have been determined, and a preliminary characterization made of the specificity of the transporters. Keywords
