Abstract
The avg. normal secretory rate of the parotid glands of 50 normal individuals was fairly constant. The volume of fluid secreted by 1 parotid gland is increased by a stream inj. of citral or menthol into the ipsilateral nasal passage. The volume of fluid secreted by the 2 parotid glands is increased by stream inj. of odorous substances such as citral or menthol into both nasal passages. The total vol. of parotid secretion during a 5-min. period of a stream inj. of odorous substances such as citral or menthol into both nasal passages was increased according to the formula stimulation time 2/3 [division sign] total amt. of parotid secretion = constant. Keywords
