The effect of stimulation of odorous substances upon the amount of secretion of the parotid glands.

Abstract
The avg. normal secretory rate of the parotid glands of 50 normal individuals was fairly constant. The volume of fluid secreted by 1 parotid gland is increased by a stream inj. of citral or menthol into the ipsilateral nasal passage. The volume of fluid secreted by the 2 parotid glands is increased by stream inj. of odorous substances such as citral or menthol into both nasal passages. The total vol. of parotid secretion during a 5-min. period of a stream inj. of odorous substances such as citral or menthol into both nasal passages was increased according to the formula stimulation time 2/3 [division sign] total amt. of parotid secretion = constant.
