Abstract
Salts of the hydrogen dinitrate ion, (O2N–O–H–ONO2)–, with such large cations as tetraphenyl-phosphonium or -arsonium, have been isolated and characterised. Spectroscopy suggests the presence of a strong hydrogen bond, which may be symmetrical. The nature of species extracted from aqueous nitric acid by long-chain amines in organic solvents is discussed. Keywords
