Abstract
A new technic is described which permits the continuous recording of the output of the left ventricle in the anesthetized animal with cerebral circulation intact. In dogs anesthetized with Na pentobarbital, the chest is opened through a midsternal incision. Under artificial respiration, the brachiocephalic trunk, a segment of the left sub-clavian artery close to the aorta, a segment of both common carotid arteries and a segment of the thoracic aorta distal to the left subclavian artery are dissected free. Heparin is then admd., first a dose of 5 mg./kg. of body wt., then 3 mg./kg. every 30 min. Cannulations are made in such a fashion that the entire output of the left ventricle, except the coronary flow, flows via the brachiocephalic and subclavian arteries, passes via a pressure damping bottle through a rotameter and returns to the 2 cannulated common carotid arteries and the descending limb of the thoracic aorta. Keywords
