Abstract
Ecotoxicological assays served to evaluate the inhibitory and toxic properties of the allelochemical nostocyclamide isolated from Nostoc. The purified molecule exhibited no inhibitory effects on the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyer when applied in concentrations of up to 10 μM. In contrast, it significantly inhibited the growth of cyanobacteria at 0.1-μM and chlorophyceans at 1.0-μM concentrations. Against rotifers and crustaceans, nostocyclamide exhibited medium toxicity (about LC50 13 μM). The possible ecological role of this allelopathic compound is discussed. Keywords
