Ecotoxicological analysis of nostocyclamide, a modified cyclic hexapeptide from Nostoc

Abstract
Ecotoxicological assays served to evaluate the inhibitory and toxic properties of the allelochemical nostocyclamide isolated from Nostoc. The purified molecule exhibited no inhibitory effects on the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyer when applied in concentrations of up to 10 μM. In contrast, it significantly inhibited the growth of cyanobacteria at 0.1-μM and chlorophyceans at 1.0-μM concentrations. Against rotifers and crustaceans, nostocyclamide exhibited medium toxicity (about LC50 13 μM). The possible ecological role of this allelopathic compound is discussed.
