Abstract
Some 13 named species of NOTOEDRES have been described from rodents, carnivores, bats, and the domestic rabbit. Of these 13 species, 3 have been recorded in the literature as occurring on mammals other than bats. They arc N. muris Mégnin 1877 (=N. alepis Railliet and Lucet 1893) from Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus and Microtus amphibius; N. cati Hering 1838 from the cat, the coati-mundi, the lynx, and the domestic rabbit; and N. musculi Krämer 1867 from Mus musculus. In the present paper 2 new species, N. douglasi n. sp. from the californian grey squirrel (Sciurus griseus griseus) and N. jamesoni n. sp. from an unnamed Vietnam mammal (probably a rodent) are added to the list of known species. In addition N. muris is recorded from the Californian vole, Microtus californicus. N. alepis Railliet and Lucet 1893 is shown to be a synonym of N. muris Mégnin 1877 and the relevant literature is reviewed in detail. Finally the etiology of mange in the squirrel is discussed and notes on notoedric mange of voles are given. Keywords
