Abstract
Analysis of 131 repeated G.T. performed before and after operation in 50 cases of hyperthyroidism in adults. The analysis of results is as follows: 1. Patients who displayed a normal curve, on repeated tests, remained normal 100% regardless of the severity of hyperthyroidism. 2. Those starting with a diabetic curve, following thyroidectomy, 38.7% became normal. These data show that the disturbance of the carbohydrate metabolism due to the stress of increased general metabolism in hyperthyroidism is a temporary one in which the production of hyperglycemia affects the insulogenic function so that it can not cope with it. When this stress ceases, the insulogenic function becomes adequate in a large percentage of cases, although 2.3% remain permanently diabetic. The factors involved in this are discussed and illustrated. There was no relationship between the severity of hyperthyroidism and the disturbance of carbohydrate metabolism. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
