Demethylation of the Insecticide Bromophos by a Glutathione-Dependent Liver Enzyme and by Alkaline Buffers1

Abstract

The two methyl groups of dimethyl aryl phosphorothionates, such as bromophos, appear to be simultaneously split off by mild alkaline hydrolysis and by the action of a glutathione-dependent liver enzyme. A procedure for preparation of the reaction product, 4-bromo-2,5-dichlorophenyl phosphorothionic acid, is given.
