The Analysis of a Catch Curve

Abstract
The best [minimum variance unbiased] estimate of the survival rate of a stationary population based on the age distribution of a random sample i.e., the "catch curve" is obtained. This estimate is compared to the so-called "Jackson" estimate and some modifications of Jackson''s estimate. These estimates are studied for both complete and truncated samples. A test of the model is given for the particular case where it is suspected there may be selection against younger ages. The estimation of the instantaneous mortality rate is studied.
