Abstract
This report is the result of a 1-year research project which aimed to develop a contemporary account of the expectations of senior personnel in 371 NHS trusts in England with regard to specialist and advanced nursing roles. The main findings covered employment issues, work activities and fields of practice. This study raises many questions about specialist and advanced nursing practice which will form the basis of an ongoing programme of research. Keywords
