The Adjuvant Activity of a Mycobacterial Water Soluble Adjuvant (WSA) in vitro

Abstract
Water soluble adjuvant (WSA), a cell wall fraction from mycobacteria, proved to be a adjuvant in vitro. WSA increased the immune response of mouse lymphoid cells against SRBC, DNP-dextran, and DNP-edestin. WSA seems to act in vitro primarily on macrophages. A direct B cell-stimulating activity of WSA could not be demonstrated. The adjuvant activity of WSA in vitro is apparently not mediated by T cells. WSA is much more effective when used in cultures that contain mouse peritoneal exudate fluid than in those which contain fetal calf serum.
