Abstract
The recording of cardiovascular sounds from the body surface has for decades been fraught with the problems of antiquated electronics, variability, ambient noise and improvisation. Unlike the electrocardiograph, the phonocardiograph remains an essentially unstandardized instrument. This editorial points up some of the special considerations in standardization with specific recommendations, as proposed by an international committee, for that weakest link in the chain of phonocardiographic instrumentation, the microphone pickup.
