First Paper: Performance Characteristics of Petro-Forge MK I and MK II Machines

Abstract
Petro-Forge is the name given to a high energy-rate forming machine actuated by the combustion of hydrocarbon fuel and air mixtures. The feasibility of this kind of device, which has been demonstrated with a prototype machine, was discussed in a previous publication (1). Based on the experience gained, several models have been developed. This paper describes the design, development and control aspects of the Mk I and Mk II machines. In particular, the procedure for devising the optimum control programme and experimental work aiming at the determination of the performance characteristics will be discussed, leading to the experimental and analytical determination of a calibration chart which relates energy output with performance parameters and stroke. The specific performances of the two machines are also compared.
