Infestation of the Skin With Demodex Folliculorum

Abstract
D. folliculorum was identified in tissue from 186 patients out of a total of 1435 skin biopsies examined. The parasite is found universally in the hair follicles, meibomian and sebaceous glands, particularly of the face, nose, lips and forehead in man as well as in some domestic animals. This survey was undertaken, first, to establish morphologic characteristics for its identification in relation to the various skin diseases, particularly epitheliomas, since it has been descr. as an incitent for this lesion as well as others. The histories of 17 patients, from whom skin biopsies were negative except for the presence of the mite, were carefully examined to learn whether D. folliculorum alone produced symptom The mite could be identified readily in routine sections; it was capable of producing certain skin lesions, including dilated hair follicles, ingrown hairs and comedons; it did not cause epitheliomas; and it was capable of producing symptoms.
