Peritoneal dialysis is being used more commonly for the treatment of chronic renal insuffiency. Infection of the peritoneal cavity has been the determining factor of long term survival for most patients. Indwelling peritoneal access devices have been the single mose important source of infection. The frequent interruptions of the sterile system associated with the use of commercial dialysate in one-liter bottles have been another cause of infection. In this paper evidence is presented that peritoneal dialysis can be conducted efficiently in the home over a long period of time without occurrence of infection, using the repeated puncture technique with a closed dialysis system and a cycling machine.
