Abstract
A 36-year-old man developed malignant pulmonary interstitial emphysema following a fall. The mechanism of causation of the condition in which air leaks into the interstitium of the lung to obstruct pulmonary blood flow and embarrass ventilation is discussed. Possible lines of treatment are reviewed and the successful treatment of this patient by the release of air from the distended lung interstitium by incisions into the mediastinal pleura, underwater seal drainage of the pleural cavity, removal of bronchial secretions and ventilation with 100 per cent oxygen which hastened the absorption of nitrogen from the tissues is described. Keywords
