Abstract
This chapter highlights the importance of motherhood to imperialism. It explains that healthier babies were required not only for the maintenance of empire, but also for production under the changing conditions made necessary by imperialist competition. The chapter furthermore discusses the works of George Newman and Arthur Newsholme on infant mortality and education for motherhood, and describes the works of the Saint Pancras School for Mothers and working-class family life. Keywords
