Abstract
Sclerotherapy for esophageal varices is now well established as a method of treatment for varices which have bled initially and then have been controlled by medical means. The long term outcome of such treatment is now under study. The value of sclerotherapy for acutely bleeding varices or as a prophylactic measure in patients with varices that have not bled is more controversial and its role awaits the outcome of additional controlled trials. Keywords
