The work ethic under challenge?

Abstract
In this chapter, the author examines feminist orthodoxy which according to C. Hakim is critical of a dualistic understanding of men’s and women’s employment patterns and employment commitment. Employment commitment can be viewed as a component of the Protestant work ethic. In many Western countries there is a fear that the welfare system discourages work ethic values and that the weakened work involvement will negatively affect the country’s international competitiveness and economic progress. The author discusses work involvement in the broader context of the work ethic and employment regimes, and develops theories of how attitudes. The Scandinavian welfare state contributes to a maximisation of jobs through high public employment, an active labour market policy and by making it possible to be temporarily absent from work through paid sick and parental leave. Through public employment and the provision of child care facilities the Scandinavian welfare state has contributed to an increased labour force participation for women.Keywords
