Abstract
Proven applications presently exist for Barkausen noise. They include for instance the NDT evaluation of residual stress and detection of stress related defects such as grinding burns. Commercially available instrumentation enables fast and repeatable measurements both in laboratory and field. Fatigue damage involves changes in residual stress as well as in dislocation density and arrangement. Barkhausen noise is known to be sensitive to these changes. This paper reviews the information presently available in literature on the use of Barkhausen noise to detect fatigue damage during cyclic loading or after a single overloading cycle. Keywords
