Abstract
A comparison of various ATM switching matrix principles using an input buffer, output buffer or central buffer bearing in mind system aspects, traffic aspects and technological aspects comes out clearly in favour of the last‐named. When larger switching networks are set up, consisting of 16/16 or 32/32 switching elements, the compromise proposal arrived at if various assessment criteria are used indicates a preference for two‐stage folded networks made up of interconnections of 16/16, 32/32 or 64/64 modules, depending on the desired maximum capacity. Three‐stage folded networks are only advantageous for switching networks with over 2000 access lines. Keywords
