Scattering of 8-GeVμMesons on Electrons

Abstract
The scattering of polarized 8-GeV μ mesons on electrons in magnetized iron has been measured. The spin dependence of the cross section gives the helicity for μ mesons from π decay. The cross section for producing knock-on electrons up to 3.4 GeV is compared with the value calculated in first order, corrected for the emission of hard photons. Measurement and calculation of the cross section agree within the experimental error, which is ±7%.
