Smoking and multiple sclerosis

Abstract
The smoking habits of 584 patients with multiple sclerosis living in northern England were compared with control data from a national survey of smoking in Britain. There was no significant association between the proportion of multiple sclerosis patients who smoke and the corresponding control data. Male smokers with the disease smoked fewer cigarettes and females the same number as the national average. Male patients started smoking significantly earlier than controls, but this trend was not apparent for females. The significance of these findings is discusset.
