Abstract
The variable in vitro resistance of Neisseria meningitidis to the sulfonamides currently make these agents unreliable in the treatment of acute meningococcal infections. Aqueous penicillin G potassium administered as the sole antibiotic in large parenteral doses is effective as demonstrated in this series of 55 patients. Penicillin has replaced the sulfonamides as the drug of choice in the current treatment of meningococcal disease.
