Abstract
Experiments have been performed to determine how the backscattered power level varies with numerical aperture. It is found that graded-index fibres are more sensitive to such variations than step-index fibres. By taking into account the dependence of the Rayleigh scattering coefficient on numerical aperture, the experimental results agree well with theory.Keywords
