Limitations of the ACTH Regulating Effect of Corticoids

Abstract
The effect of cortisone on the stress-induced release of ACTH was studied, using the adrenal ascorbic acid depletion test as a criterion of ACTH release. Cortisone in its free or acetylated form, at dose levels of 0.5, 5 or 25 mg./100 g. in aqueous or oily suspensions, and admd. subcut. or intraperit., failed to prevent or even to significantly decrease the adrenal ascorbic acid depletion resulting from various types of severe stress. These results show that ACTH release in response to stress is compatible with a high level of circulating corticoids and that hypocorticoidism is not the sole responsible agent of the activation of the adrenocorticotropic function.
