Abstract
Since the first cases of AIDS were recorded in 1981, AIDS and its causal agent HIV have precipitated a major public health emergency worldwide. To day, with more than 100 countries reporting cases of AIDS, it is clear that this devastating disease continues to spread. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, about ten million people worldwide have been infected with HIV, approximately 250,000 of whom have AIDS. Projections by WHO suggest that there may well be between 15-30 million cases of AIDS by 1995 (1).
