Abstract
This paper discusses the genesis of noise in vacuum tubes. Simple if not rigorous derivations for various kinds of noise are given, and it is shown how the noise on an electron beam can be characterized. A few simple examples show how particular results can be obtained but nothing involving laborious mathematics is included. The effect of transverse velocities is discussed briefly, but no results are given. Keywords
