Measuring the severity of symptoms in outpatient alcoholics.

Abstract
To compare the distribution of Missouri Alcoholism Severity Scale (MASS) scores of outpatients with those of inpatients, the MASS scores of 108 outpatients (31 women) in an alcoholism program at a metropolitan state hospital were obtained. The means .+-. SD of men and women were nearly identical (13.48 .+-. 12.85 and 13.52 .+-. 12.61, respectively). Compared with a group of 5921 (742 women) inpatients, outpatient scores averaged .apprx. 1/3 lower. The ranges of scores for outpatients and inpatients were comparable, although women outpatients had a somewhat more restricted range. This may be due to relatively few extreme scores among the men.
