Abstract
For each K a many-electron variational state is defined. It is shown that for a specific choice of variational parameters all the states have the same energy. Since the variational equations which determine the optimum choice of parameters are continuous in K it follows that the low lying states form a continuum. There is therefore no gap between the ground and first excited state in intermediate-valence SmS.Keywords
