Abstract
Solutions were found in which Paramecium bursaria died off gradually, leaving the "Zoochlorella." The algae were cultured independently with most success on starch or nitrate agar, prepared with the proper mineral solution (New York City tap water), when 0.5% dextrose or 0.2% sodium acetate was added, with the pH adjusted to 6.8-7.0. The algae showed a higher resistance than the host (1) in tryptone, proteose-peptone and dextrose cultures, (2) to increasing concentrations of alcohol, and (3) to decreasing concentrations of II ions.
