Abstract
SUMMARY: Recent developments in the classification of the earliest vascular plants are discussed. The fertile parts of Hicklingia edwardii, a remarkably well preserved plant from the Middle Old Red Sandstone of Scotland, are described. It is concluded that this plant had lateral not terminal sporangia and may be assigned provisionally to the Zosterophyllophytina until more is known about its anatomy.
