Abstract
The conditions for narrow 60° dislocation dipoles to dissociate into faulted dipoles are determined by energy calculations. Analytic expressions are derived for the energies of the 60° and faulted dipoles in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases and curves giving the transition separations are plotted for several metals (Cu, Ag, Au, Pb, Al). Equilibrium configurations of the S and Z dipoles are exhibited graphically and a simple analytic approximation is derived for the Z dipoles. The method of formation is discussed. This paper is the first of two dealing with the measurement of stacking-fault energy from the faulted dipole transition. Keywords
