Abstract
Taranakia lambi gen. nov., sp. nov., and Erythrites jacksoni sp. nov. are described from New Zealand, from larvae (Acarina: Erythraeidae: Erythraeinae) ectoparasitic on insects. This is the first extra-Australian record of Erythrites, a genus common as ectoparasites on Australian insects. The five E. jacksoni specimens show an increase in the number of scutalae, from the standard 3 + 3 ranging to 4 + 4; all were taken from adult brachypterous female grasshoppers, Brachaspis collinus (Hutton), attached on the metepistemum or on the inferior aspects of winglets. Taranakia resembles the Australian genus Rainbowia; the principal difference being is that Taranakia has a bifid instead of a trifid palpal tibial claw. T. lambi is recorded from two specimens: one from the forewing of a moth Melanchra mutans (Walker) (Noctuidae), and one from an undetermined phasmatid. Keys to the genera of the larval Erythraeinae of the world and the species of Erythrites larvae from Australia and New Zealand are presented.
