Abstract
The method used by Cohen and Frishberg to obtain the general hierarchy equation for reduced density matrices is generalized to derive a general hierarchy equation for reduced transition matrices. A general hierarchy equation for reduced Slater-determinant transition matrices is also derived and is then utilized to obtain the orbital equations for multiconfiguration self-consistent field theory without use of the variational principle. Keywords
