Theory of the pulsed optoacoustic technique

Abstract
A theory of the pulsed optoacoustic effect for a weakly absorbing liquid is presented for all ratios of pulse time τp to acoustical transit time across the beam radius τa . The behavior in different regimes of τa and τp is studied and attention is drawn to possible dependence on details of the temporal and radial profiles of optical intensity. The limit to the sensitivity of this technique due to electrostriction is analyzed.
