Abstract
A criterion is given for deciding if small precipitates are of mixed vacancy and interstitial character, or of only one character. In the first case darkfield electron micrographs show a constant proportion of anomalous images of each asymmetry as the order of reflection increases. In the second case the minority proportion progressively disappears. Keywords
