Dielectric Relaxation on the Smectic B Phase in a Binary Mixture

Abstract
Dielectric relaxation measurements in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz in the SA, SB, and SF phase of the binary system 4‐n‐pentyloxybenzylideneamino‐4′cyanobiphenyl(1)/4‐n‐octyloxyphenyl trans‐4‐n‐octylcyclohexanecarboxylate have been carried out. The systematical change of the relaxation frequency FR of I for the reorientation of the molecules around their short axes has been studied in the SB phase for different concentrations. A maximum of FR at the mole fraction 0.5 has been detected which could indicate a decrease of the three dimensional correlation in SB. The increase in FRis connected with a decrease of the activation energy of the respective relaxation process.
