Abstract
Ions produced by the interaction of a neodymium-Q-switch laser on solid tantalum have been investigated according to their energy, charge state and angular distribution. The laser intensity was of the order of 1010 W cm-2. It was found that the ion energy spectra have smooth shapes and that the total number of ions can be well fitted to a Boltzmann distribution. The angular distribution of the emitted current was essentially cos2 and only slight differences were observed for different charge states of the ions. The energy dependence of the different charged ion species exhibits a selective acceleration mechanism. Keywords
