Abstract
To the Editor: The Sounding Board articles concerning the Resident Matching Program (NRMP) in the May 7 issue1 , 2 prompted me to write about an entirely different problem inherent in the matching system. I became aware of this difficulty as a student participating in the match and saw it demonstrated when I served for a year on the Intern Selection Committee at North Carolina Memorial Hospital (Chapel Hill).The problem is best illustrated with an example. Suppose the six best students from Medical School A participate in the match. Also suppose that they all apply to and rank two residency programs, . . .
